Timothy Shimeall

CERT Program at Software Engineering Institute
Senior Network Situational Awareness Analyst

The only person to make more than ten consecutive appearances at FloCon, Tim is the Senior Network Situational Awareness Analyst of the CERT Program at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI). Tim is responsible for developing methods to support decision making in security at and above the enterprise level, including identifying useful data collection. Of particular interest to him are methods that affect defended systems and malicious software that are effective despite common defenses. Tim’s work is highly empirical and often involves the application of formal methods to practical problems facing network security and operational personnel. Before joining the SEI, Tim was an associate professor at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He continues to be an active instructor on a variety of topics in software engineering, information warfare, and security, and supervised in excess of 35 MS theses and 3 PhD theses. Tim has taught courses for a variety of educational institutions and private corporations, in both local and distance learning formats. He continues to teach both for the SEI and Carnegie Mellon University. Tim earned a PhD from the University of California, Irvine. He has subsequently published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles and numerous technical reports.
